An easier way to build data segments

User segments should help customers gain deeper data insights. But to create them, customers had to use a confusing interface that was so old any meaningful improvements would require a complete redesign and rewrite - an effort we had no resources for. We decided to leverage AI to apply a band-aid instead, and enable customers to use natural language to create segments.
What i achieved
  • Significantly simplified the segment creation experience.
  • The feature was adopted well, accounting for 20% of all segment page interactions (as compared to maintenance of existing ones).
  • Mentored a Visual Designer in her first product feature project.
  • Supported an AI Engineer in refining prompts with product context.
Process
Technical feasibility assessment
  • A developer built a limited-functionality proof-of-concept, to make sure natural language input could interact with old code, and successfully create segments.
Defining scope and flow
  • I used this opportunity to help a Visual Designer familiarise herself more with product design, and we paired to ideate on scope and flow of the real feature.  
Refining design specification
  • Worked side by side with an AI engineer to ensure correct builder output.
  • Oversaw the Visual Designer refining interaction and pixels for edge-cases, e.g. errors.
  • Recommended users focused on maintaining existing segments can minimise the AI segment builder.
  • Refined UI copy.
